DC Power Electrical Safety Guidelines
The following electrical safety guidelines apply to a DC-powere d router:
A DC-powered router is equip p ed with a DC term in al blo ck tha t is rated for the
power require
ments of a maximally configured router. To supply sufficien t
power, terminate the DC inp ut wiring on a facility DC source capable o f
supplying at least 8 A @ –48 VDC. Incorporate an easily accessible disconnect
device into t
hefacilitywiring.Besuretoconnectthegroundwireorconduit
to a solid office (e arth ) ground. A closed loop ring is recomme n ded for
terminating the ground conductor at the ground stud.
Run two wires f rom the circuit breaker box to a source of 48 VDC.
In the United States, a restricted access area is one in accordance with Articles
110-16, 110-
17, and 110-18 of the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70.
NOTE: Primary overcurrent protection is provided by the building circuit breaker.
This breaker should protect against excess currents, short circuits, and e arth faults
in accordan
ce with NEC ANSI/NFPA70.
Ensure that t
he polarity of the DC input w iri ng is correct. Und er c ertain
conditions, connections with reversed polarity m ight tri p the primary circuit
breaker or dam age the equipment.
For personal safety, connect the green and yellow wire to safety (earth) ground
at both the r
outer and the supply side of the DC wiring.
The marked i
nput voltage of –48 VDC for a DC-powered router is the nominal
voltage associated with the ba ttery circuit, and any higher voltages are only to
be associated with float voltages for the charging function.
Because the router is a positive ground system, you must connect the positive
lead to the
terminal labeled
RTN, the negative lead to the terminal labele d
–48 VDC, and the earth ground to the chassis grounding points.
Power Sour
ces for Redundant Power Supplies
If your J63
50 Services Router includes an optional redundant DC power
supply, connect each of the two power supp lie s to different input power
sources. Failuretodosomakestheroutersusceptibletototalpower
